Interesting Quicksilver or Spotlight interaction with Dashboard

I'm pretty sure Apple doesn't intend for a user to be able to use normal applications while viewing Dashboard Widgets. I find this annoying. Especially because the keyboard also apparently has no practical use when focused on the dashboard. Today I found an interesting way to work around this. Hitting F12 moves focus to the Dashboard and for the most part your keyboard now does nothing interesting. However, as with all applications, you can still use Command-Space to open Spotlight or (at least on my PB) Ctrl-Option-Space to open QuickSilver. Once either of those is launched, they will behave and launch other programs as normal, even though the Dashboard will be open on top of them. Though you'll still have the darkened background of the Dashboard, you can at least read through to what's underneath. This can be helpful if you've hopped into Dashboard to look something up, and you want to be able to refer to it as you type or if you have a Dashboard monitor for something you're doing in another program.

JOBY

Rode bikes with Roomy Shana to J&R this afternoon and bought myself a JOBY Gorrillapod. Ingenius invention. Only twenty bucks. It's a little tripod that can also grab onto things. I'm really excited to use it at Zion later this month. My camera's standing on my desk in it right now and looking very cute. tagged .

Schmap - Photo Inclusion

This photo I took of National Guard guys sitting in the North End of Boston during the 2004 Democratic National Convention is being included in a weird downloadable travel guide called . I think it's free. It's Windows-only, so I haven't actually seen it. I hope it can't be printed in high resolution, because that photos actually pretty fuzzy. tagged .

QOOP Flickr book

I ordered a QOOP book of my Gina's Wedding set on Flickr. It's for Grace, the 4-year-old seen in many of those photos. (I haven't been real consistent about privacy settings, so I'm not sure how much of that stuff you'll be able to see if you're not a friend or family.) I'm excited. Hope QOOP does a good job with the printing, binding, etc. If so, I'll probably start ordering more of those. Good coffee-table material. Update (12 May): It's been shipped (via DHL ground) and should be delivered Monday. I'm excited. I may get to deliver it in person in early June, but flying down to GA would mean backing out of a volunteer thing that weekend, which is lame. tagged

not macs

Just saw this new "I'm a PC" "I'm a Mac" tv ad. Does Apple really not think that the MacOS will be targeted by virus writers? I love my Mac, and I'm glad I don't have anything to worry about for now, but I don't consider that a stable attribute of the platform. It's just a matter of time. tagged
